Stories of the Civil War in Georgia
More than history books ever could, personal accounts of the Civil War give us an idea of what life in those tumultuous years was truly like. The state of Georgia is rich with stories of the War that changed everything. Today’s story is that of Carrie Berry, a ten-year-old girl living in Atlanta during the Civil War. Her diary provides a child’s view of the attacks the city faced and their toll on the population. Her diary makes it very clear that her life revolved around the schedule of “shellings” that were being inflicted on the city. She grows up during the destruction and maintains a sense of hope and normalcy throughout. To read excerpts from her diary visit the GA Civil War stories page.
